Brief
Cells become rooms.
In Wismar, a former prison was to become the hostel Das Kittchen. Its 30 single, double and multi-bed rooms needed to be fully fitted out – in an existing building whose historic fabric was to be preserved.
Solution
Power on the wall, not in the wall.
Coat racks, shelves, small desks, integrated room and ambient lighting and TV mounts hang on over 200 metres of wall rail. Power and lighting control run through custom-made installation modules in birch wood – minimising new cable runs through the old existing walls.
Result
Fitted out without sacrificing the building.
All 30 rooms are fully fitted out, and the historic fabric is preserved. Because the fittings hang on rails, individual elements can be swapped while the hostel is in operation.
